Derek Dahl, Appleton (George & Barb Dahl)
“My spring break began in Schofield, Wisconsin and ended in New Orleans, Louisiana. I traded in my pads, skates, gloves, helmet, and stick for a Tyvck suit, rubber boots, respirator, hard hat, and sledge hammer. Upon arriving in post-Katrina New Orleans, I understood how relatively insignificant my concern over the Showcase team was, when compared to daily life and death worries of the hundreds of thousands of Gulf Coast residents devastated and displaced by the hurricanes. I quickly went from stopping “one-timers” to gutting houses and gradually my hockey disappointments faded. I put my life back into perspective, reconfirmed my dreams, re-ordered my goals and reset my responsibilities.”
